Overview

The plantar fascia is a strong band of tissue that supports the arch of the foot. It lies directly under the skin and connects the heel to the front of the foot. Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation or irritation of this tissue. The most common symptom is pain and stiffness in the bottom of the heel. The bottom of the foot may also ache or burn and walking may make the pain worse.

Improper footwear and poor walking mechanics can irritate the bottom of the foot. Heel pain can severely limit the golfer's ability to walk the course and play.

Tips for Managing the Symptoms

Treatment for plantar fasciitis includes resting the injured foot or decreasing activities that make the pain worse and applying ice.

Plantar fasciitis is exacerbated by tight muscles in the feet and calves. Massaging the arch of the foot by placing it on a golf ball and making circular motions, in addition to calf and toe stretching can reduce pain. Sometimes using an over-the-counter orthotic or heel cushion in footwear can drastically reduce the symptoms of plantar fasciitis.
